James “Jim” Lovell grew up in Lovell, Oklahoma – a small town south of Marshall.  Lovell attended Oklahoma A&M College (OAMC) starting in 1952.  The first in his family to attend college, Lovell credits OAMC graduate Raymond Brice for guidance and encouragement for him to attend OAMC following high school.

Lovell worked in the Agriculture Department on campus during his freshman year taking care of the experimental hog feeding pens.  He also worked other jobs on campus during his time at OAMC.  On campus he met and would later marry his wife Janis, a Home Economics major, at that time.

In 1956, Lovell graduated with a double major in Agricultural Education and Animal Husbandry.  He continued his education in Stillwater, earning a master’s degree in Agricultural Education.  In 1963, Lovell wrapped up a PhD in Ecology from Kansas State University.

Over the years, Lovell has served as a teacher and administrator.  He and his wife Janis have four kids, two of which are OSU alumni.
